SUMMARY:Frontier Fiddles: Soundscapes of the Wild Southwest
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival presents “Frontier Fiddles: Soundscapes of the Wild Southwest” concert live on Sunday\, May 17 at 4 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \nEnjoy an evening where history\, storytelling\, and high-energy music meet on stage\, in a special concert that brings together acclaimed violinist Arvel Bird and the Wild West Fiddle Project for an immersive performance filled with rhythm\, images\, and shared discovery. \nThe concert blends masterful fiddle and guitar with projected images that reimagine history and immerse us in landscapes from across Arizona. The music moves through Celtic\, Hispanic\, frontier\, and Indigenous sound worlds that shaped the region’s cultural life\, while stories and visuals reveal the people and places behind the tunes. The result is lively\, welcoming\, and designed for listeners of all ages\, with moments of audience participation and musical dialogue. \n  \nClassically trained as a violinist\, Arvel Bird’s compositions and performances are a confluence of styles from Celtic\, bluegrass and his original Native American folk and Celtic rock orchestrations. As he worked to develop his own music style and build a large following\, Arvel went wherever the music called him\, which led him away from classical and towards Bluegrass\, Appalachian\, Folk and Celtic. From 1986 to 2000 Arvel toured with Glen Campbell\, Loretta Lynn\, Tom T. Hall\, Ray Price\, Louise Mandrell\, and Clay Walker. \n \nThe Wild West Fiddle Project researches\, recreates\, and revives historic musical traditions of Arizona and the Colorado Plateau\, bringing them to life through concerts\, workshops\, and community dances. SUMMARY:In the Living Room Music Series: Abigail Fischer Earthshine
DESCRIPTION:The “In the Living Room Music Series” continues its eclectic season at the Sedona International Film Festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre with an evening of profound vocal power and spiritual resonance. Monday\, May 18 at 7:00 p.m.\, series creator\, award-winning songwriter\, Shondra Jepperson hosts Abigail Fischer Earthshine\, acclaimed opera singer who has graced the world’s most iconic stages and who is also a catalyst for transformational healing. \nAbigail’s musical pedigree is extraordinary. Trained as a classical singer and cellist in a family of performers\, her career includes appearances with the Los Angeles Opera\, Cincinnati Opera\, and the Beijing Music Festival\, with performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. She has been a muse for modern composers\, premiering works like Missy Mazzoli’s Song from the Uproar and starring in the 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Angel’s Bone. \nNow based in Sedona\, Abigail has bridged her classical mastery with her work as a traumainformed breathwork facilitator and shamanic sound healer. This “unplugged” session will offer a rare look at how her experience in the highest echelons of innovative art has shaped her current mission of guiding others toward “True Voice Emergence.” \n“Abigail is a force of nature\,” says moderator Shondra Jepperson. “She’s a classical vocal powerhouse and musician in Sedona whose mission is to help others as a sound healer. This evening will be about more than just a beautiful voice and a musician; it will be about the power of self-expression and the courage to evolve as an artist.” \nExecutive Director Patrick Schweiss added: “The continuation of this series is partly because the audience is having a relaxed living room experience with dynamic talent that Shondra is bringing to our stage\, like Abigail. Our audiences are having so much fun with the informal tone of this series\, where they interact by asking questions during the concert.” \nThe “In the Living Room Music Series” is made possible through the generous support of presenting sponsor Cleaner Quicker Car Wash\, alongside concert sponsors Sefton Engineering\, LaserGirl Skincare\, and new national sponsor MoonBrew. This collaborative support ensures that 100% of the ticket sales go directly to the performing artists and the Sedona International Film Festival. \nIn the Living Room Music Series featuring Sandrine Abigail Fischer Earthshine will take the stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Monday\, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $20 and are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177 or online at the BUY TICKETS link to the right. SUMMARY:Thinking Like Water
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the one-night-only Northern Arizona premiere of “Thinking Like Water” on Wednesday\, May 20 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \n“Thinking Like Water” is a 5-part documentary series that features watershed restoration pioneer Bill Zeedyk and showcases low-tech\, low-cost methods to restore watersheds. Episode 1 of the series will be featured at this special premiere and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and special guests. \nAll are welcome! It also serves as the kick-off for the second annual Sedona Water Festival happening May 20-22 at the Sedonya Conscious Living Centre. \n“Thinking Like Water” offers the pioneering work of 91-year-old “water wizard” Bill Zeedyk\, and his proteges and allies\, who have continually devised ways of transforming degraded wetlands and drylands into more resilient ecosystems that help gird against drought and climate change. \nZeedyk soothes the watershed\, coaxes straightened streams back on their natural meandering course\, lifts the creek\, raises the water table and recreates lost habitats. All while using simple nature-based restoration techniques he designed or innovated upon. These constellations of “Zeedyk structures” have slowly gained favor over the last 25 years and now his methods have even been institutionalized. \nInspirational and practical\, the film gifts to the viewer practices that can be taken right out of the viewing realm and into their own landscapes. Zeedyk’s rise\, after retirement\, to a legendary visionary in ecological restoration will provide inspiration to anyone who longs to make a difference in the world\, at any age\, and in any field. \n“Thinking Like Water” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Wednesday\, May 20 at 7:00 p.m.\, followed by a live Q&A discussion with the filmmaker and special guests. \nTickets are $15\, or $13 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Penelope
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to conclude the 2026 season of its Sedona Professional Theatre Company with “Penelope” live on stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre\, running May 22-24. \n“Penelope” — with music and lyrics by Alex Bechtel — stars Alex Keiper and Alex Bechtel and is directed by Alex Bechtel\, who is also the musical director. \nPenelope has been waiting… and waiting… and waiting for her husband\, Odysseus\, to return from a decade-long war. Given the rest of the soldiers came home years ago – forgive her\, but she’s going to need a drink while she tells you about it. With a beautiful folk-inflected pop score backed by an onstage band of strings\, piano and drums\, Penelope opens up about her loneliness\, her son’s disappearance\, her suitors\, her gods\, her faith in her marriage – and ultimately\, the faith that she must have in herself. So go ahead and grab a drink\, too\, and listen to this ancient tale made new: A woman wondering who she is if she’s alone\, and discovering that she has been\, is and will always be complete – with or without her husband by her side. \nBlending sharp humor with a folk-pop score\, this modern musical retelling of The Odyssey gives Penelope a voice as she awaits her husband’s return\, moving through her loneliness to discover her own strength. \n \nALEX KEIPER\nBarrymore-Award winning actress Alex Keiper is thrilled to be in Sedona and in awe of this community. DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Holding Liat” showing May 22-28 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \n“Holding Liat” has premiered to rave reviews at film festivals around the world and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2026. \nOn the morning of October 7\, 2023\, Israeli-American Liat Atzili and her husband Aviv were at home when Hamas attacked their kibbutz. By nightfall\, Liat and Aviv are captives in Gaza along with 250 other people — 12 of whom\, like Liat\, are American citizens. \nCaught between international diplomacy and a rapidly escalating war\, their family must face their own uncertainty and conflicting political perspectives in the pursuit of Liat and Aviv’s release. This agonizing process\, and the ultimate fate of their loved ones\, challenges how the members of the family understand themselves and their place in the conflict. \nThrough the intimate lens of a family’s experience\, “Holding Liat” poses complex questions of identity across generations\, as the family is thrust into the epicenter of a global conflict rapidly unfolding in real-time. \n“One of the best movies of the year.” — Ann Hornaday\, Washington Post \n“Politically potent and emotionally gripping … a heartbreaking true story.” — Jordan Mintzer\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“Holding Liat” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre May 22-29. SUMMARY:El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego: Met Live Opera
DESCRIPTION:The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is honored to be the home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2025-2026 season\, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival. \nThe season concludes with Frank’s “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” live via simulcast on Saturday\, May 30 at 10 a.m. and the encore presentation on Wednesday\, June 3 at 3 p.m. \nPlan to come early as John Steinbrunner will lead a pre-opera talk one hour before the LIVE production on Saturday. \nThe Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. \nFashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. \nMusic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. \nACT I\nOn the Day of the Dead\, villagers gather in a cemetery to honor departed loved ones and summon them to return from the underworld. Diego calls out to Frida\, but his reverie is interrupted by an old woman selling flowers. The old woman reveals herself as La Catrina\, Keeper of the Dead. In Mictlān\, Catrina summons Frida to arise and return to visit Diego\, but Frida refuses. Frida notices a young actor\, Leonardo\, who wants to go back dressed as Greta Garbo to please a fan of the actress. He encourages Frida to return for the chance to paint a new Frida without pain or anguish. Frida decides she will return to the world of the living. As Diego continues to summon Frida from above\, she and the other departed souls begin their journey. \nACT II\nIn the world of the living\, Diego is bereft of inspiration. Frida suddenly appears to him. She is overjoyed to be without pain and part of the vibrant life around her. Diego pleads for an embrace\, which Frida cannot give. Diego leads Frida back to her home\, Casa Azul\, where she must confront the realities of her past life and the limitations of her return. She embraces him and is racked by the returning pain of her living existence. When dawn breaks\, it is time for her to return to the underworld. Diego pleads for the gods to call him back with her. As Frida and Diego approach the underworld\, Catrina cries out to Mictlantecuhtli\, god of the underworld\, who appears and brings Diego into the world of the departed. Frida and Diego are united for eternity. \nThe 2025-2026 Met Live Opera season in Sedona is generously sponsored by Chris Fladlien. \nThe Met Live Opera’s “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday\, May 30 at 10 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday\, June 3 at 3 p.m. The pre-opera talk will take place one hour before the live Saturday simulcast. \nTickets are $25 general admission\, $22 for Film Festival members\, and $15 for students. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. SUMMARY:Revolutionary America
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Revolutionary America” showing May 31-June 2 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \n“Revolutionary America” tells the story of the American Founding\, the greatest political achievement in history. The American colonists had developed a unique way of life as they practiced self-government for 150 years. \nIn the struggles between the colonies and the mother country that followed the French and Indian War\, Britain declared that Americans had no right to rule themselves. This went against everything the Americans knew. In response\, our ancestors risked their “lives\, fortunes\, and sacred honor” to fight the War for Independence. Against all odds\, they won\, and in victory formed a stable\, lasting republic. \nThis documentary — narrated by Tom Selleck and featuring interviews with prominent scholars and commentators — will help you see the Revolution through the eyes of the Americans who lived through it. With expert commentary\, historical documents\, compelling cinematography\, and beautiful music\, experience the Revolution like never before! \n“Revolutionary America” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre May 31-June 2. Showtimes will be Sunday\, May 31 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.; and Monday and Tuesday\, June 1 and 2 at 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members.
