SUMMARY:Gutenberg! The Musical!
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to continue the 2026 season of its Sedona Professional Theatre Company with “Gutenberg! The Musical!” live on stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre\, running April 10-12. \n“Gutenberg! The Musical!” — written by Scott Brown and Anthony King — stars Michael Doherty and Alex Bechtel and is directed by Chris Mixon\, with musical direction by Dan Kazemi. \nIn this two-man musical spoof\, a pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new\, ill-advised project – a big\, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm\, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic\, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them that elusive Broadway contract. \n \nMICHAEL DOHERTY\nMichael Doherty — an east coast-based actor\, writer\, and comedian — has spent five seasons at the Utah Shakespeare Festival\, playing roles including Fanny Babbs in Charley’s Aunt\, Charlie in The Foreigner\, the Narrator in Every Brilliant Thing\, and Mr. Green in Clue. Off-Broadway: 59E59 Theaters. Regional: Berkeley Repertory Theatre\, Denver Center for the Performing Arts\, Cleveland Play House\, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre\, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park\, Connecticut Repertory Theatre\, Wilma Theater\, Gulfshore Playhouse\, and more. Doherty has been awarded the Barrymore Award for Supporting Actor in a Musical and the Theatre Bay Area Award for Leading Performance in a Play. \n \nALEX BECHTEL\nAlex Bechtel is a member of Actor’s Equity Association and has been a professional actor since he graduated from The University of the Arts in 2008. He is a graduate of the inaugural class of The Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training. Acting credits include work with The Walnut Street Theatre\, Arden Theatre Company\, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival\, People’s Light & Theatre Company\, 1812 Productions\, Theatre Horizon\, New Paradise Laboratories\, and narration work with The Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2018\, Bechtel was awarded a Barrymore Award for Outstanding Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his work in the Arden Theatre Co’s The Light Princess\, for which he also composed original music. \n“Gutenberg! The Musical!” is generously sponsored by Bill and Janet Johnson.\nSeason sponsors are Renee and Doug Leuthold and Chuck Marr. \n“Gutenberg! The Musical!” will take the stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Friday\, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday\, April 11 and 12 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. \nFor tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177.
