SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo: Exhibition on Screen
DESCRIPTION:Sedona International Film Festival presents the Exhibition on Screen series with the encore of “Frida Kahlo”. The event will show in Sedona on Tuesday and Sunday\, May 19 and 24 at 3:30 p.m. at the festival’s Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nFrida Kahlo is a phenomenon. She is arguably the world’s favorite female artist – beloved by young and old. Exhibition on Screen’s award-winning film — first released during covid to a restricted audience — is back by popular demand with an exciting new addition from the blockbuster transatlantic exhibition from Tate Britain and MFA Houston ‘Frida Kahlo: the Making of an Icon’. Back in the cinemas in May 2026\, one month before the Tate exhibition opens\, allowing audiences to watch both the film and see the show. \nWho was Frida Kahlo? Everyone knows her face but who was the woman behind the bright colors\, the big brows and the floral crowns? Take a journey through the life of a true icon\, discover her art\, and uncover the true story of her rebellious\, passionate and turbulent life. \nMaking use of the latest technology to deliver previously unimaginable quality\, we take an in-depth look at key works throughout her career. Using letters Kahlo wrote to guide us\, this definitive film reveals her deepest emotions and unlocks the secrets and symbolism contained within her art. \nExhibition on Screen’s trademark combination of interviews with those who knew her and world experts\, commentary and a detailed exploration of her art\, combined with new special bonus footage from the 2026 Tate exhibition\, delivers a treasure trove of colour and emotion. This personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works\, her home\, her studio and highlights the source of her feverish creativity\, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life\, beauty and revolution. \n“Frida Kahlo” was created in close collaboration with world experts and those who knew her. \nThe Exhibition on Screen Series is generously sponsored by Goldenstein Gallery. \n“Frida Kahlo” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Tuesday and Sunday\, May 19 and 24 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission or $13 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Penelope
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to conclude the 2026 season of its Sedona Professional Theatre Company with “Penelope” live on stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre\, running May 22-24. \n“Penelope” — with music and lyrics by Alex Bechtel — stars Alex Keiper and Alex Bechtel and is directed by Alex Bechtel\, who is also the musical director. \nPenelope has been waiting… and waiting… and waiting for her husband\, Odysseus\, to return from a decade-long war. Given the rest of the soldiers came home years ago – forgive her\, but she’s going to need a drink while she tells you about it. With a beautiful folk-inflected pop score backed by an onstage band of strings\, piano and drums\, Penelope opens up about her loneliness\, her son’s disappearance\, her suitors\, her gods\, her faith in her marriage – and ultimately\, the faith that she must have in herself. So go ahead and grab a drink\, too\, and listen to this ancient tale made new: A woman wondering who she is if she’s alone\, and discovering that she has been\, is and will always be complete – with or without her husband by her side. \nBlending sharp humor with a folk-pop score\, this modern musical retelling of The Odyssey gives Penelope a voice as she awaits her husband’s return\, moving through her loneliness to discover her own strength. \n \nALEX KEIPER\nBarrymore-Award winning actress Alex Keiper is thrilled to be in Sedona and in awe of this community. Previous credits include: The Utah Shakespeare Festival\, Milwaukee Repertory Theater\, The Arden Theater Company\, Constellations Stage & Screen\, Gretna Theater\, Gulfshore Playhouse\, InterAct Theatre Company\, Theatre Exile & more. She is an Independence Foundation Fellow & an alum of The University of the Arts & The Atlantic Theater Company. Next up for Alex is Romeo & Juliet at Milwaukee Rep. \n \nALEX BECHTEL\nAlex Bechtel is a member of Actor’s Equity Association and has been a professional actor since he graduated from The University of the Arts in 2008. He is a graduate of the inaugural class of The Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training. Acting credits include work with The Walnut Street Theatre\, Arden Theatre Company\, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival\, People’s Light & Theatre Company\, 1812 Productions\, Theatre Horizon\, New Paradise Laboratories\, and narration work with The Philadelphia Orchestra. SUMMARY:Midwinter Break
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Midwinter Break” showing May 22-28 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \n“Midwinter Break” is a stirring meditation on faith\, commitment\, and the enduring power of love\, as a longtime couple takes a life-changing trip to Amsterdam. \nRetired long-time couple Stella and Gerry (Academy Award nominees Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds) travel from their home in Glasgow to Amsterdam for an impromptu holiday. \nTraversing the beautiful European city\, they find themselves freed from the staid routines that have come to define their lives. But as the hours pass\, Stella and Gerry realize that after decades together\, their relationship has reached a crossroads. After so much time and so many memories\, long-held promises and deeply concealed wounds threaten to come to light and force them to confront their future. \nBased on the acclaimed novel by Bernard MacLaverty\, director Polly Findlay crafts a powerful debut that poses important questions about the nature of faith and commitment\, and the enduring power of love. \n“Midwinter Break” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre May 22-29. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, May 22\, 23\, 27 and 28 at 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday\, Monday and Tuesday\, May 24\, 25 and 26 at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Holding Liat
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Holding Liat” showing May 22-28 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \n“Holding Liat” has premiered to rave reviews at film festivals around the world and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2026. \nOn the morning of October 7\, 2023\, Israeli-American Liat Atzili and her husband Aviv were at home when Hamas attacked their kibbutz. By nightfall\, Liat and Aviv are captives in Gaza along with 250 other people — 12 of whom\, like Liat\, are American citizens. \nCaught between international diplomacy and a rapidly escalating war\, their family must face their own uncertainty and conflicting political perspectives in the pursuit of Liat and Aviv’s release. This agonizing process\, and the ultimate fate of their loved ones\, challenges how the members of the family understand themselves and their place in the conflict. \nThrough the intimate lens of a family’s experience\, “Holding Liat” poses complex questions of identity across generations\, as the family is thrust into the epicenter of a global conflict rapidly unfolding in real-time. \n“One of the best movies of the year.” — Ann Hornaday\, Washington Post \n“Politically potent and emotionally gripping … a heartbreaking true story.” — Jordan Mintzer\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“Holding Liat” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre May 22-29. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, May 22\, 23\, 27 and 28 at 6:30 p.m.; and Monday and Tuesday\, May 25 and 26 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members.
