DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Deaf” showing Aug. 28-Sept. 3 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \n“Deaf” was the big winner at the Berlin International Film Festival last year and has been a hit with festival audiences and critics around the world. \nÁngela\, a deaf woman\, is expecting a child with her hearing partner\, Héctor. Ángela’s deafness raises concerns during her pregnancy regarding connecting with her daughter. Post-delivery\, Héctor supports her as she learns to mother in a society lacking adequate accommodations for the hearing-impaired.  \nÁngela faces the challenges of raising her daughter in a world not made for her. \n“Deaf” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre Aug. 28-Sept. 3. DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez” showing Sept. 3-10 at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres. \nAgainst political resistance and industry skepticism\, Luis Valdez pushes Chicano storytelling from the fields to the film screen with “Zoot Suit” and “La Bamba”\, crafting iconic works that challenge\, celebrate\, and expand America’s story. \n \nAn auteur emerges from America’s underclass: from migrant farmworker to revolutionary artist\, Luis Valdez changed American culture. In the 1960s\, his El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks and helped mobilize workers to win the first farmworker union contract. His “Zoot Suiet” was the first Chicano play on Broadway. \nDespite critical rejection that killed the show\, he persevered\, creating “La Bamba” — a breakout blockbuster that authentically depicted Mexican American life to the world. Now in its 60th year\, El Teatro continues to be a beacon for Latino/a creators. This is the story of an artist who gave voice to the overlooked and opened pathways for generations. \nThe film features Lou Diamond Phillips\, Cheech Marin\, labor activist Dolores Huerta\, Linda Ronstadt\, and Edward James Olmos (who narrates the film\, reprising the role of “Zoot Suit’s” El Pachuco). \n“Inventive and engaging.” — The Playlist \n“Enlightening and entertaining.” — The Hollywood Reporter \n“American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez” will be shown at the Mary D. SUMMARY:Outdoor Film: Spaceballs
DESCRIPTION:It’s “Big Screen at Basecamp” as the Sedona International Film Festival partners with Sedona Beer Company for its “Movies on the Move” cinema under the stars outdoor film experience at Basecamp in West Sedona — every Thursday in the summer season! \nJoin us on Thursday\, Sept. 3 as we present “Spaceballs” at Basecamp/Sedona Beer Company at dusk. \n“Spaceballs” (1987) is a sci-fi comedy directed by Mel Brooks with an all-star ensemble cast. It is a spoof of the original “Star Wars” trilogy\, along with other pop culture staples like “Star Trek” and “Alien”. In a distant galaxy\, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply\, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called “Perri-Air.” In desperation\, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man\, half-dog partner\, Barf (John Candy). \nBasecamp will offer a selection of craft beers\, food and beverages (and a special menu item themed to each film)\, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Sedona International Film Festival. \n \n“Spaceballs” will be shown outdoors at Basecamp Sedona Beer Company (70 Dry Creek Road) on Thursday\, Sept. 3 at dusk. Seating will begin at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs.
