Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres. \nMEET THE FILMMAKERS on preview night: Thursday\, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. Writer/director/producer David Alvadaro and producer Everett Katigbak will be in Sedona to host the preview night film and post-screening Q&A discussion! \nAgainst political resistance and industry skepticism\, Luis Valdez pushes Chicano storytelling from the fields to the film screen with “Zoot Suit” and “La Bamba”\, crafting iconic works that challenge\, celebrate\, and expand America’s story. \n \nAn auteur emerges from America’s underclass: from migrant farmworker to revolutionary artist\, Luis Valdez changed American culture. In the 1960s\, his El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks and helped mobilize workers to win the first farmworker union contract. His “Zoot Suiet” was the first Chicano play on Broadway. \nDespite critical rejection that killed the show\, he persevered\, creating “La Bamba” — a breakout blockbuster that authentically depicted Mexican American life to the world. Now in its 60th year\, El Teatro continues to be a beacon for Latino/a creators. This is the story of an artist who gave voice to the overlooked and opened pathways for generations. \nThe film features Lou Diamond Phillips\, Cheech Marin\, labor activist Dolores Huerta\, Linda Ronstadt\, and Edward James Olmos (who narrates the film\, reprising the role of “Zoot Suit’s” El Pachuco). \n“Inventive and engaging.” — The Playlist \n“Enlightening and entertaining.” — The Hollywood Reporter \n“American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \nChris Murphy is an international touring violinist\, singer-songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist whose powerful live performances blend Americana\, Folk\, Jazz\, Celtic\, World music\, and improvisation into what he calls a “live film score.” \n   \nBased in Los Angeles\, Murphy performs more than 200 concerts each year throughout the United States and Europe\, captivating audiences with expressive violin playing\, heartfelt songwriting\, and an engaging stage presence. \nWhether performing intimate original songs or expansive instrumental soundscapes\, Murphy’s music explores themes of love\, loss\, redemption\, hope\, and resilience. \n“Both wily\, charismatic performer and fire-breathing virtuoso of the violin\, Chris Murphy crams more musical mileage into short set than most players do in an entire tour.” — Future Music Magazine \n \nABOUT CHRIS MURPHY\nChris Murphy grew up in an Irish-Italian family near New York City\, surrounded by the disparate sounds of his neighbors’ traditional music: Italian mandolin songs\, pulsing Latin rhythms\, and bracing Irish rounds. Eventually falling under the spell of late\, great multi-instrumentalist David Lindley (Jackson Browne\, Ry Cooder\, Bob Dylan) Murphy went on to explore Turkish and Indian music at Bard College and studied composition at Boston’s prestigious New England Conservatory of Music. \nSince then\, Murphy has hypnotized crowds in more than forty US states\, done extensive tours of England\, Belgium \, and The Netherlands\, and amassed a breathtakingly deep catalog of over 500 works. His over fifteen original albums — including 2023’s brilliant “The Road & the Stars” — boast A-list players from the Tom Waits band\, Wilco\, X\, The Desert Rose Band\, Elvis Costello\, and the Buena Vista Social Club. \n“To me\, music is liquid\,” Murphy explains thoughtfully. “I’ll twist and turn\, and hammer and mold\, and shape\, cut\, and paste the music to create a fresh experience for my audience at all costs.” \nChris Murphy: Live in Concert takes the stage at the Mary D. SUMMARY:Outdoor Film: Little Miss Sunshine
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor films are coming to the Village! The Sedona International Film Festival is partnering with Village of Oak Creek Association to present its “Movies on the Move” outdoor film experience on Mondays throughout the summer. \nJoin us on Monday\, Sept. 7 when we present “Little Miss Sunshine” outdoors at the Village of Oak Creek Association Park\, next to the clubhouse.  \n“Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) follows a dysfunctional family on a cross-country road trip. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards\, including Best Picture. It won two Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Alan Arkin) and Best Original Screenplay (Michael Arndt). \nThe Hoover family — a man (Greg Kinnear)\, his wife (Toni Collette)\, an uncle (Steve Carell)\, a brother (Paul Dano) and a grandfather (Alan Arkin) — puts the fun back in dysfunctional by piling into a VW bus and heading to California to support a daughter (Abigail Breslin) in her bid to win the Little Miss Sunshine Contest. The sanity of everyone involved is stretched to the limit as the group’s quirks cause epic problems as they travel along their interstate route. \nBring your lawn chair or blanket and relax in front of a massive outdoor movie screen. Enjoy food and beverage offerings from the festival’s “Movies on the Move” mobile concession stand.  \n“Little Miss Sunshine” will be shown outdoors at the VOC Association Park (690 Bell Rock Boulevard in the Village of Oak Creek) on Monday\, Sept. 7 at dusk.
