SUMMARY:Queen Budapest
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to join theatres around the world for a special global cinema event\, “Queen Budapest”\, coming to the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres for two shows only on Oct. 7 and 10. \nCalling all Queen fans … you have the chance to watch Queen’s momentous concert movie\, on the big screen. \nOn July 27\, 1986\, Queen performed the largest-ever stadium concert at the Népstadion in Budapest in front of 80\,000 ecstatic fans. The concert was part of the famed Magic Tour\, which was the last time the band toured with lead singer Freddie Mercury. \nNow\, this original concert film has been beautifully rescanned and remastered in 4K alongside a dynamic new audio mix\, featuring many of Queen’s favorite tracks — ”Bohemian Rhapsody\,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love\,” “I Want To Break Free” and “We Are The Champions.” \nWith three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall\, this was the first Western rock concert performed in a stadium behind the then Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country’s top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity. \n“Queen Budapest” is a must–see cinema event for Queen fans across the world. \n“Queen Budapest” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Wednesday\, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Saturday\, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $15\, or $13 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177 or online at the BUY TICKETS link to the right. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:The Last Dive
DESCRIPTION:Share an inspirational week of healing and friendship at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre for a week-long run of “The Last Dive” — an award-winning documentary from Emmy Award-winning director Cody Sheehy and winner of Best Cinematography at the Tribeca Film Festival\, that has drawn sold-out crowds nationwide. \nThe Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Last Dive” showing Oct. 9-15. The film premiered to rave reviews at the recent Sedona International Film Festival. \nProducer Christopher Gebhardt will be in Sedona for the Oct. 12 and 13 screenings to host the film and post screening Q&A. \nTerry Kennedy is a legendary figure in Baja Mexico\, an American veteran who has spent decades living on (and in) the water. Once a man burdened by a troubled past\, Terry’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy\, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. An extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist. \nNow in his 80’s\, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace\, closure\, and a chance to say goodbye. \nDirected by award-winning filmmaker Cody Sheehy and produced by acclaimed Mark Monroe\, “The Last Dive” is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant documentary that invites viewers to reflect on our connection to the natural world and the wild\, mysterious creatures that help us find our place in it. \n“The Last Dive” is a cinematic experience not to be missed: playing for one week only! \n“The Last Dive” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatres Oct. 9-15. Showtimes will be Friday\, Sunday and Tuesday\, Oct. 9\, 11 and 13 at 7:00 p.m.; Monday\, Oct. 12 at 3:00 p.m.; and Thursday\, Oct. 15 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Sedona Poetry Slam
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona Poetry Slam opens its 18th season on Saturday\, Oct. 10\, with a twist: The first slam of the year takes the stage on the set of “The Dead Quilters Society\,” the play being staged at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre that weekend. Performance poets will bring high-energy\, competitive spoken word to the theater starting at 7:30 p.m. \nPoets will compete for cash prizes on a set built for the popular Sedona historical play — a collision of page\, stage and improvised scenery that regulars say only adds to the show. \nOpen Slam \nA poetry slam is like a series of high-energy\, three-minute one-person plays\, judged by the audience. Slam poetry is an art form that allows written page poets to share their work alongside theatrical performers\, hip-hop artists and lyricists. \n   \nPoets come from as far away as Phoenix\, Tucson\, Prescott and Flagstaff\, competing against local poets from Sedona and Cottonwood\, college poets from Northern Arizona University and youth poets from Verde Valley high schools. All types of poetry are welcome on the stage\, from street-wise hip-hop and narrative performance poems\, to political rants and introspective confessionals. Any poem is a “slam” poem if performed in a competition. All poets get three minutes per round to entertain and inspire the audience with their creativity. \nAnyone can sign up to compete in the slam for the $75 grand prize and $25 second-place prize. To compete in the slam\, poets will need three original poems\, each lasting no longer than three minutes. No props\, costumes nor musical accompaniment are permitted. The poets are judged Olympics-style by five members of the audience selected at random at the beginning of the slam. \n   \nEmail foxthepoet@yahoo.com to sign up early to compete or by the Friday before the slam\, or sign up at the door the day of the slam. \nThe prize money is funded in part by a donation from Verde Valley poetry supporters Jeanne and Jim Freeland. \nPoetry Slam \nFounded at the Green Mill Tavern in Chicago in 1984 by Marc Smith\, poetry slam is a competitive artistic sport designed to get people who would otherwise never go to a poetry reading excited about the art form when it becomes a high-energy competition. Poetry slams are judged by five randomly chosen members of the audience who assign numerical value to individual poets’ contents and performances. \n   \nPoetry slam has become an international artistic sport\, with more than 100 major poetry slams in the United States\, Canada\, Australia and Western Europe. Slam poets have opened at the Winter Olympics\, performed at the White House and at the United Nations General Assembly and were featured on “Russell Simmons’ Def Poets” on HBO. \nSedona has sent four-poet teams to represent the city at the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte\, N.C.\, Boston\, Cambridge\, Mass.\, Oakland\, Calif.\, Decatur\, Ga.\, Denver and Chicago. \nTickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door.
