SUMMARY:Atonement
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Atonement” showing Oct. 9-15 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nDisplaced from their home by U.S. military action during the early days of the Iraq War\, the Khachaturian family finds refuge with relatives\, gathering their three generations together under one roof. But when another bombing erupts nearby\, they decide to return to their home across the city. \nAs they navigate the war-torn streets of Baghdad\, the family is trapped in a firefight between U.S. Marines and insurgents\, and one Marine’s split-second decision devastates the family. Years later\, haunted by his time in Iraq and aided by a New Yorker journalist\, the Marine seeks to reconcile with the Khachaturian matriarch and her surviving family members. \nAnchored by moving\, unforgettable performances from Boyd Holbrook\, Hiam Abbass\, and Kenneth Branagh\, “Atonement” is a powerfully human story about the immeasurable costs of war\, exploring universal questions about guilt\, redemption\, and the nature of forgiveness. \n“Bracingly real. You can feel the movie burning away the fog of war.” — Variety \n“Hiam Abbass gives a master class in less-is-more restraint. This is acting of the highest caliber. Her mesmerizing performance here ranks with her very best.” — The Hollywood Reporter \n“A powerful human drama about the often-elusive nature of forgiveness.” — Next Best Picture \n“Atonement” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres Oct. 9-15. Showtimes will be Friday\, Sunday\, Monday and Tuesday\, Oct. 9\, 11\, 12 and 13 at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday\, Oct. 10 at 12:30 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday\, Oct. 14 and 15 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:The Last Dive
DESCRIPTION:Share an inspirational week of healing and friendship at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre for a week-long run of “The Last Dive” — an award-winning documentary from Emmy Award-winning director Cody Sheehy and winner of Best Cinematography at the Tribeca Film Festival\, that has drawn sold-out crowds nationwide. \nThe Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Last Dive” showing Oct. 9-15. The film premiered to rave reviews at the recent Sedona International Film Festival. \nProducer Christopher Gebhardt will be in Sedona for the Oct. 12 and 13 screenings to host the film and post screening Q&A. \nTerry Kennedy is a legendary figure in Baja Mexico\, an American veteran who has spent decades living on (and in) the water. Once a man burdened by a troubled past\, Terry’s life was transformed by an unlikely friendship with Willy\, a 22-foot oceanic manta ray. For nearly two decades\, Willy would slap his wings against the hull of Terry’s sailboat to signal their next dive\, and together they explored the ocean’s depths. An extraordinary bond that turned Terry into an unexpected conservationist. \nNow in his 80’s\, Terry embarks on one final journey to a remote island in hopes of reuniting with his old friend. But he’s also searching for something deeper: peace\, closure\, and a chance to say goodbye. \nDirected by award-winning filmmaker Cody Sheehy and produced by acclaimed Mark Monroe\, “The Last Dive” is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant documentary that invites viewers to reflect on our connection to the natural world and the wild\, mysterious creatures that help us find our place in it. \n“The Last Dive” is a cinematic experience not to be missed: playing for one week only! \n“The Last Dive” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatres Oct. 9-15. Showtimes will be Friday\, Sunday and Tuesday\, Oct. 9\, 11 and 13 at 7:00 p.m.; Monday\, Oct. 12 at 3:00 p.m.; and Thursday\, Oct. 15 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:Arsenic and Old Lace
DESCRIPTION:Northern Arizona University and the Sedona International Film Festival are partnering to present The Classics\, a monthly classic film series. \nNAU/SIFF Classics will be curated and hosted by School of Communication Professor Emeritus Paul Helford. \nThe series will continue on Tuesday\, Oct. 13 with “Arsenic and Old Lace”. \nThe funniest — and perhaps best — Halloween movie ever! Cary Grant is hilarious\, Raymond Massey channels Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster\, and Peter Lorre is perfect. Directed by Frank Capra\, this gleefully macabre comedy follows two sweet\, matronly aunts who “help” lonely old gentlemen by spiking their homemade elderberry wine with arsenic. \nCary Grant stars as Mortimer Brewster\, a drama critic and playwright who has famously condemned marriage. Returning home to announce his wedding\, he discovers his sweet aunts are serial killers who “help” lonely old gentlemen by spiking homemade elderberry wine with arsenic and burying victims in the cellar. \nFrank Capra directed “Arsenic and Old Lace” in 1942\, but its release was delayed until the Broadway hit closed years later. Most Broadway stars reprised their roles\, except Boris Karloff\, the theater’s biggest box-office draw. Raymond Massey took the role of Jonathan\, Mortimore’s older murderous brother\, hilariously evoking Karloff’s Frankenstein’s Monster. Peter Lorre is superb as Dr. Einstein\, Jonathan’s plastic surgeon accomplice. Grant disliked his performance\, but audiences have always loved it. \nPaul Helford will introduce the film\, provide historical and artistic context\, and lead a discussion following the movie. \nA lifelong film lover Helford has taught and written about films for over 50 years. As a television station manager and award-winning producer\, he produced and hosted a weekly classic TV film show. He’s taught high school and college film classes. At NAU he started the film program major in 2006 and has co-directed and co-hosted the NAU College of Arts and Letters film series since 2004. \n“Arsenic and Old Lace” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Tuesday\, Oct. 13 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.
