SUMMARY:You Had to Be There
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “You Had to Be There” showing Oct. 16-21 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \n“You Had to Be There” premiered to rave reviews at the recent Sedona International Film Festival. It is now making its national theatrical debut. \nOn June 1\, 1972\, a humble production of a hit musical retelling of the Book of Matthew officially opened its run at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in downtown Toronto. As for what happened next\, that may be most accurately expressed by the subtitle for Nick Davis’ celebratory documentary\, “You Had to Be There: How the Toronto ‘Godspell’ Ignited the Comedy Revolution\, Spread Love & Overalls\, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way)”. \nAnd that’s no empty boast about a bunch of singing hippies. Based solely on the bright futures of so many of the talents who formed the cast during the 14-month run — Martin Short\, Eugene Levy\, Gilda Radner\, Victor Garber\, Andrea Martin\, Dave Thomas\, and Jayne Eastwood plus musical director Paul Shaffer — “Godspell’s” impact and influence cannot be overstated. The improvisational element of the musical itself helped foster a unique sensibility that comedy fans would soon recognize in “Saturday Night Live”\, “SCTV”\, and countless other TV shows and movies. \nAs Davis’ film reveals\, the Toronto “Godspell” was a hugely formative experience in the lives of the participants\, too. With its deft mix of engaging interviews with surviving participants\, animated recreations\, and other means of compensating for the scarcity of original archival materials (if only audience members had smartphones in 1972)\, “You Had to Be There” brings this special time back into the present with an irrepressible sense of joy. \nThe all-star cast of “You Had to Be There” includes Martin Short\, Eugene Levy\, Gilda Radner\, Paul Shaffer\, Stephen Schwartz\, Lin-Manuel Miranda\, Mike Myers\, Heidi Gardner\, Gary Gulman\, James Austin Johnson\, Janeane Garofalo\, Andrea Martin\, Victor Garber\, Dave Thomas\, Jayne Eastwood\, Valda Aviks\, Avril Chown\, Don Scardino and Rudy Webb. \n“You Had to Be There” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre Oct. 16-21. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday\, Oct. 16 and 17 at 3:00 p.m.; Sunday\, Oct. 18 at 4:00 p.m.; Monday\, Oct. 19 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m.; and Tuesday and Wednesday\, Oct. 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:The History of Concrete
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The History of Concrete” showing Oct. 16-22 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nAfter attending a workshop on how to write a Hallmark movie\, filmmaker John Wilson tries to use the same formula to sell a documentary about concrete. \nFollowing the finale of his TV series\, filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete\, the world’s most widely used building material\, appears as an ever-present life force\, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. \nTo tell this seemingly drab story\, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie’s appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble — literally and figuratively — as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry. \n“John Wilson is back with a movie\, thank God.” — New York Magazine \n“An absurd triumph. Laugh-out-loud funny\, compelling and surprising.” — The Guardian \n“The History of Concrete” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres Oct. 16-22. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday and Thursday\, Oct. 16\, 17\, 18 and 22 at 3:30 p.m.; and Monday\, Tuesday and Wednesday\, Oct. 19\, 20 and 21 at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Bernstein's Wall
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Bernstein’s Wall” showing Oct. 16-22 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nDouglas Tirola’s thrilling documentary “Bernstein’s Wall” traces Leonard Bernstein’s lifelong struggle to create social change and bring people together through his work. Like a symphony with multiple movements\, the film presents the sweeping grandeur of Bernstein’s life alongside his thoughts about America\, politics\, race\, family\, media\, sex\, and religion. \n \nThe son of a Russian Jewish immigrant\, Bernstein rose to become Conductor of the New York Philharmonic and a towering figure in classical music\, Broadway\, television\, and culture. Yet behind the icon was a vulnerable and conflicted artist wrestling to balance his ambitions\, sexuality\, religion\, and the family he deeply loved. He used his influence to advocate for progressive political change\, often at considerable personal risk. \nGuided by Bernstein’s voice\, “Bernstein’s Wall” draws on archival footage\, photographs\, personal letters\, family audio\, and highlights from his career to create a portrait of one of the 20th century’s most prominent icons. \n“Bernstein’s Wall” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres Oct. 16-22. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday and Sunday\, Oct. 16\, 17 and 18 at 6:30 p.m.; Monday and Wednesday\, Oct. 19 and 21 at 3:30 p.m.; Tuesday\, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m.; and Thursday\, Oct. 22 at 3:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Cottonwood Premiere: In the Company of Wolves
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present “Monday Movies on Main” on Monday\, Oct. 19 with the Cottonwood premiere of “In the Company of Wolves” at 7 p.m. at Old Town Center for the Arts. \nAcademy Award-winner Jeff Bridges narrates this stunning journey\, following wolves and other animals as co-travelers through American history — from the shores of England to the birth of the New Republic\, and ultimately the colonization of the vast\, contested landscapes of the modern American West. \nA place where the ensemble doesn’t merely walk through history; they trot\, lope\, stampede\, and migrate across it — reminding us that the wild and the domesticated alike have always reflected a deeper story of who we are as a nation\, and who we might yet become. \n“With surprising and little-known histories that stretch back to England before unfolding across the landscapes of the American West\, I never intended to make a film only about wolves\, although they figure prominently throughout\,” said director Susan Kucera. \n“It is through wolves\, bison\, horses\, sheep\, cattle\, and other animals that the film explores the strange contradictions\, myths\, unexpected connections\, competing ideas of freedom\, and the invention of the American frontier. And of course\, Jeff Bridges carries the story with curiosity\, humanity\, and gravitas.” \n“In the Company of Wolves” will show at Old Town Center for the Arts on Monday\, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission and $9 for Film Festival members and $10 for students. Movie concessions will be available\, including beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, water\, popcorn and a selection of movie candy. \nFor tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Tickets can also be ordered in advance online at the BUY TICKETS link to the right. \nOld Town Center for the Arts is located at 633 N. 5th Street (just off Main) in Cottonwood.
