SUMMARY:The Scout
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Scout” showing Oct. 30-Nov. 5 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nSofia works as a location scout for a TV pilot filming in New York City. It’s her job to find the homes\, businesses\, and exteriors where the show will be filmed. Driving around the city’s different neighborhoods\, she enters the private spaces of strangers to photograph their cozy apartments and eclectic shops\, stepping into the fabric of their lives while trying to satisfy the demands of her erratic employers. \nOver a day filled with these encounters\, Sofia witnesses moments of curiosity\, vulnerability\, and quiet tension until her work takes a sudden\, personal turn. \nDrawing from her own experience as a location scout\, writer-director Paula González-Nasser captures the poetry and costs of being a young creative. Her celebrated directorial debut “The Scout” crafts a contemplative exploration of urban disconnection\, following one woman’s journey through other people’s worlds as she struggles to find her own. \n“A masterpiece … an immediate all-time great film on filmmaking.” — In Review Online \n“An under-the-radar gem.” — Variety \n“The Scout” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre Oct. 30-Nov. 5. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, Oct. 30\, 31 and Nov. 4 and 5 at 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday and Monday\, Nov. 1 and 2 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie” showing Oct. 30-Nov. 5 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nMore than 30 years after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa\, a religious decree calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie over the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses\, Rushdie traveled to Chautauqua to speak about the United States as a sanctuary for exiled writers and artists. The event marked the 20th anniversary of a writer-refuge program — a setting meant to celebrate safety and creative freedom. It was there that a young man rushed the stage\, intent on killing him with a knife. Using excerpts from Rushdie’s works\, including his powerful memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder\, Alex Gibney’s documentary is both a striking testament to freedom of expression and a defiant response to the attempt on Rushdie’s life. \nThe film incorporates never-before-seen footage shot by Rushdie’s wife\, Rachel Eliza Griffiths\, in the days and weeks following the attack. This material offers a graphic\, unflinching\, and deeply intimate account of what happened\, including archival footage of Rushdie’s early career and rise to literary fame\, the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses\, and events leading up to the attempted murder. It also traces Rushdie’s physical and spiritual recovery\, including the challenges he continues to face\, from losing an eye to the reduced use of one hand. \n“Knife” blends reportage with fictionalized dialogues to explore the mindset of the attacker\, probing the “why” behind the violence. At its core\, the film is a portrait of resilience — of Rushdie’s own extraordinary strength and the love that carried him through this ordeal — and a call to action against censorship and hatred. It argues that art itself can be a form of resistance. \nIn “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie”\, Gibney — working with longtime collaborators Andy Grieve (editor) and Will Bates (composer) — crafts a poetic dreamscape that reflects how Rushdie views his writing as his own “knife\,” a tool to fight back\, reclaim his story\, and respond to violence with imagination and art. \n“Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre Oct. 30-Nov. 5. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, Oct. 30\, 31 and Nov. 4 and 5 at 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday\, Monday and Tuesday\, Nov. 1\, 2 and 3 at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:James McNeill Whistler
DESCRIPTION:Sedona International Film Festival presents the Exhibition on Screen series with “James McNeill Whistler”. The film will premiere in Sedona on Nov. 3 and 8 at the festival’s Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nIn an era of great change and great beauty emerged the character of James McNeill Whistler. Considered by some to be one of the great innovators of 19th century art\, he was a contemporary of the Impressionists\, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. \nBoldly experimental and famously witty\, Whistler disrupted the strict conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty\, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in the history of great art. He found a parallel between painting and music\, and entitled many of his paintings “arrangements”\, “harmonies” and “nocturnes”\, emphasizing the importance of tonal harmony in his work. \nHis most famous painting\, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871)\, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother\, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood. It is arguably one of the most famous paintings in history and this film will unveil the artist behind the art. \nTate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades. This blockbuster exhibition promises to reawaken the world to just how important Whistler is to art history\, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. Exhibition on Screen will bring these stunning works and the incredible story behind them to cinemas around the world while the exhibition is still running\, bringing this truly global artist to a global audience. \nThis will be an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he has had on those who followed. \nThe Exhibition on Screen Series is generously sponsored by Goldenstein Gallery. \n“James McNeill Whistler” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Tuesday and Sunday\, Nov. 3 and 8 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $15 general admission\, or $13 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177 or online at the BUY TICKETS link to the right. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.
