SUMMARY:Giant — The Play
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to join theaters around the globe for the worldwide premiere of “Giant — The Play” showing Nov. 19 and 22 at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres. \n“Giant” — the 5-star critically acclaimed play starring John Lithgow as Roald Dahl — comes to the big screen. Winner of 3 Olivier Awards including Best Play and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play (John Lithgow)\, the production was filmed live in London’s West End ahead of its sold-out Broadway run. The stellar cast includes Aya Cash\, Elliot Levey and Rachael Stirling. \nA world-famous children’s author under threat. A battle of wills in the wake of scandal. And one chance to make amends … It’s the summer of 1983\, The Witches is about to hit the shelves and Roald Dahl is making last-minute edits. But the outcry at his recent\, explicitly antisemitic article won’t die down. Across a single afternoon at his family home\, and rocked by an unexpectedly explosive confrontation\, Dahl is forced to choose: make a public apology or risk his name and reputation. \nInspired by real events\, “Giant” explores with dark humor the difference between considered opinion and dangerous rhetoric offering a complicated portrait of a fiendishly charismatic icon. \n“The most thought-provoking play of the decade.” — The Times \n“Giant — The Play” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Thursday\, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. and at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Sunday\, Nov. 22 at 4:00 p.m. \nTickets are $15 general admission\, or $13 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:To Have and Have Not
DESCRIPTION:Northern Arizona University and the Sedona International Film Festival are partnering to present The Classics\, a monthly classic film series. \nNAU/SIFF Classics will be curated and hosted by School of Communication Professor Emeritus Paul Helford. \nThe series will continue on Thursday\, Nov. 19 with “To Have and Have Not”. \nBogey met Bacall. He was 44; she was 19. Director Howard Hawks bet Ernest Hemingway he could make a great movie from the author’s worst novel. The result? A legendary screen romance\, the electrifying debut of Lauren Bacall\, and one of the most enduring classics of Hollywood’s Golden Age. \nThe story begins with a fishing trip. Filmmaker Howard Hawks reportedly boasted to pal Ernest Hemingway that he could make a movie from the novelist’s “worst book” — the “goddamned piece of junk” called “To Have and Have Not”. Hawks and Hemingway outlined the screenplay\, which screenwriters Jules Furthman and William Faulkner transformed into a very different story. \nThe novel is set in Key West and Cuba; the film moves the action to Martinique\, where Bogart’s Harry Morgan becomes involved with French Resistance fighters. Hawks discovered 19-year-old Lauren Bacall on a magazine cover. Her extraordinary chemistry with Bogart launched a legendary screen romance and lifelong marriage. With Hoagy Carmichael on piano\, the film delivers wit\, romance\, adventure\, and sheer entertainment. \nPaul Helford will introduce the film\, provide historical and artistic context\, and lead a discussion following the movie. \nA lifelong film lover Helford has taught and written about films for over 50 years. As a television station manager and award-winning producer\, he produced and hosted a weekly classic TV film show. He’s taught high school and college film classes. At NAU he started the film program major in 2006 and has co-directed and co-hosted the NAU College of Arts and Letters film series since 2004. \n“To Have and Have Not” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Thursday\, Nov. 19 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.
