Born in Houston\, Texas\, in 1946\, he arrived in Los Angeles with his family three years later. At just 5 years old\, he was backing gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. By age 10\, he was appearing with Ray Charles on film\, and by age 15\, he was touring with Little Richard in Hamburg\, Germany\, where he met Richard’s opening act — The Beatles. \nHe would later perform and record with the biggest names in music\, including The Beatles\, The Rolling Stones\, Eric Clapton\, Barbra Streisand\, Johnny Cash\, Neil Diamond\, the Red Hot Chili Peppers\, and countless others. \nHe generated his own unforgettable No. 1 hits\, including “Outa-Space\,” “Will It Go Round in Circles\,” “Nothing from Nothing\,” and “You Are So Beautiful” — and his first hit single in 1969\, on The Beatles’ Apple Records\, “That’s The Way God Planned It\,” produced by his lifelong friend\, George Harrison. \nDespite his success\, Billy struggled to reconcile his deep relationship with the Black church with his sexuality\, setting off a lifelong quest to find love and acceptance. \n“Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres March 20-26. Showtimes will be Friday\, March 20 at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday and Wednesday\, March 22 and 25 at 7:00 p.m.; Monday\, March 23 at 3:00 p.m.; Tuesday\, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.; and Thursday\, March 26 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Tristan und Isolde: Met Live Opera
DESCRIPTION:The Mary D. Fisher Theatre is honored to be the home for the Met Live Opera programs for the 2025-2026 season\, presented by the Sedona International Film Festival. \nThe season continues with Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” live via simulcast on Saturday\, March 21 at 9 a.m. and the encore presentation on Wednesday\, March 25 at 1 p.m. \nPlan to come early as John Steinbrunner will lead a pre-opera talk one hour before the LIVE production on Saturday. \nAfter years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives in cinemas worldwide on March 21 as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. \nThe momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon — hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth — as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading “Tristan und Isolde” at the Met. \nMezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke. \nACT I\nIsolde is being escorted by Tristan on his ship to Cornwall\, whose ruler (and Tristan’s foster father)\, Marke\, she is to marry. She tells her companion\, Brangäne\, how she once treated Tristan’s wounds after he killed her betrothed\, Morold. Now humiliated by her captivity\, she asks Brangäne to prepare poison for her and Tristan to drink. Brangäne gives them a love potion instead. As the ship sails into the harbor\, Tristan and Isolde confess their love. \nACT II\nThe lovers meet in secret while Marke is away. Tristan expresses his belief that love can only find fulfillment at night. Faced with the inevitability of their parting at daybreak\, Tristan and Isolde resolve to die. Marke discovers them and is devastated by Tristan’s disloyalty. Tristan implores Isolde to set off into the night with him. She agrees. After a struggle with Marke’s men\, Tristan is wounded and collapses. \nACT III\nTristan is lying in a coma with Kurwenal\, his aide\, watching over him. As his life slips away\, he recalls traumatic events\, including the death of his parents. Kurwenal has summoned Isolde\, and when her ship appears\, the delirious Tristan tears off his bandages and dies in her arms. Marke and Brangäne try to draw Isolde back to the realm of day and life\, but she expires in a rapture of ecstatic love. \nThe 2025-2026 Met Live Opera season in Sedona is generously sponsored by Chris Fladlien. \nThe Met Live Opera’s “Tristan und Isolde” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on Saturday\, March 21 at 9 a.m. (live simulcast) with an encore on Wednesday\, March 25 at 1 p.m. The pre-opera talk will take place one hour before the live Saturday simulcast. \nTickets are $25 general admission\, $22 for Film Festival members\, and $15 for students. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:Ghost Elephants
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Ghost Elephants” showing March 21-26 at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres. \nDirected\, narrated and written by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog\, “Ghost Elephants” is a lyrical tale of survival\, reconnection and the enduring power of ancient knowledge in the face of modern loss. \nIn the mist-covered highlands of Angola\, deep within its forests\, a mystery endures: the elusive ghost elephants of Lisima\, the potential living descendants of the largest land mammal ever recorded. Steve Boyes\, conservation biologist and leader of the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project\, is determined to prove their existence. \nIn order to find these elusive elephants\, Boyes and fellow National Geographic Explorer Kerllen Costa have teamed up with three KhoiSan master trackers: Xui\, Xui Dawid\, and Kobus. Refugees from a war-torn past who have faced considerable marginalization in southern Africa\, the trackers return to their ancestral lands to succeed where advanced technology could not. \n“Ghost Elephants” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatres March 21-26. Showtimes will be Saturday\, Sunday and Monday\, March 21\, 22 and 23 at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday\, March 24 at 7:00 p.m.; and Wednesday and Thursday\, March 25 and 26 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Turner & Constable
DESCRIPTION:Sedona International Film Festival presents the Exhibition on Screen series with “Turner & Constable”. The film will premiere in Sedona on March 24 and 29 at the festival’s Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nCelebrating the 250th anniversary of their births\, this unmissable new documentary explores Turner and Constable’s intertwined lives and legacies alongside the groundbreaking Tate exhibition. \nTwo of Britain’s greatest painters\, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other\, both used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them. Tate Britain is brought these two greats together for a groundbreaking exhibition\, in London from November 2025 to April 2026\, and Exhibition on Screen once again has exclusive and privileged access to bring their extraordinary art and remarkable stories to the big screen so that you can enjoy both film and exhibition together. \nDiscover unexpected sides to both artists with intimate views of sketchbooks and personal items and insights from leading experts. \nTurner’s blazing sunsets and sublime scenes from his travels and Constable’s idealized depictions of beloved places from home whipped the public of the time into a frenzy of enthusiasm. Constable represents the very best of the old school of realism and pastoral nostalgia; Turner\, an exciting new way of depicting emotion and dreamlike impressions. Critics compared their starkly different styles to a clash of ‘fire and water’. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to see these greats side-by-side\, as they so often were in life\, on the big screen for the first time. \nThe Exhibition on Screen Series is generously sponsored by Goldenstein Gallery. \n“Turner & Constable” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre on Tuesday and Sunday\, March 24 and 29 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $15 general admission\, or $13 for Film Festival members. Tickets are available in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office or by calling 928-282-1177 or online at the BUY TICKETS link on the right. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:Cry Wolf: A Play with Magic
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to continue the 2026 season of its Sedona Professional Theatre Company with “Cry Wolf: A Play with Magic” live on stage at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre\, running March 27-29. \n“Cry Wolf: A Play with Magic” — written and performed by Rhett Guter — is directed by West Hyler. \n“Cry Wolf” blurs the line between illusion and reality\, transforming the theatre into a high-stakes game show where the prize is nothing less than truth itself. SUMMARY:The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” showing March 27-April 2 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nBased on a remarkable true story\, “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” traces the life of Herbert Heller and the unlikely friendship that transforms both him and a young woman searching for her own sense of direction. \nAs a boy\, Herbert survived the Holocaust and carried the weight of an unspoken secret for six decades\, choosing silence as a way to move through the world. When he meets Abby\, a perceptive and intuitive teenager quietly grappling with her own emotional burdens\, something shifts. Abby’s curiosity\, compassion\, and steady presence begin to open a door Herbert long believed was sealed. \nAs Herbert slowly shares the truth of his past\, an unexpected bond takes root—one that bridges generations and reveals how connection can illuminate even the darkest corners of memory. Through each other\, they discover understanding\, healing\, and the courage to finally voice what has been held inside. \nStarring Stephen Lang (Avatar) as Herbert\, Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade) as Abby\, and Luke David Blumm (Where the Crawdads Sing) as young Herbert\, “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” is a profoundly moving film about resilience\, remembrance\, and the life-changing impact of being truly heard. It is a testament to the power of storytelling — and to the hope found in human connection. \n“The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres March 27-April 2. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday\, March 27 and 28 at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday and Monday\, March 29 and 30 at 7:00 p.m.; and Tuesday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, March 31\, April 1 and 2 at 4:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:A Magnificent Life
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “A Magnificent Life” showing March 27-April 2 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nIn 1955\, 60-year-old Marcel Pagnol is a well-known and acclaimed playwright and filmmaker. When the editor-in-chief of ELLE magazine commissions a weekly column about Pagnol’s childhood\, he sees this as a great opportunity to go back to his artistic roots: writing. \nRealizing his memory is failing him and deeply affected by the disappointing results of his last two plays\, Pagnol starts doubting his ability to pursue his work. That is until Little Marcel — the young boy he used to be — appears to him as if by magic. \nTogether\, they will explore Marcel Pagnol’s incredible life and bring back to life his most cherished encounters and memories. His memories resurface as the words flow: the arrival of talkies\, the first major film studio\, his attachment to actors\, the experience of writing. \nThe greatest storyteller of all time becomes the hero of his own story. \n“A Magnificent Life” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres March 27-April 2. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday\, March 27 and 28 at 3:30 p.m.; Sunday\, March 29 at 6:30 p.m.; Monday\, March 30 at 4:00 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday\, March 31 and April 2 at 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. Seen from the dog Flame’s point of view\, we experience how a “career change” from being a herding dog to being a specially trained service dog\, allows her to positively transform the life of her veteran\, who suffers from PTSD. \n• The Golden Retriever Bachelor: As a spoof on the reality TV show\, three older women compete for the affection of a senior dog\, Cooper — a tongue-in-cheek story meant to encourage adoption of senior dogs. \n• Jamtland Dogs: A documentary following two women dog sled racers preparing for an international dog sledding competition in Northern Sweden. \n• The Funeral: A moving memorial service given by a family who want to honor the dog they loved. \n• Brought Back to Life: Retired firefighter who has lost his purpose in his life finds it again with a search-and-rescue dog who is rescued from a shelter. \n• A Touch of Romance: A woman is so caught up reading stories of love\, she is oblivious to a man who has fallen in love with her – but his dog figures out how to orchestrate “a touch of romance.” \n• Chocolate Retriever: A claymation rendering of what a woman does to rescue her dog from the toxic-for-dogs chocolate bar he has ingested. \n• Lessons from the Life and Death of Clifford: A sweet\, sad philosophical contemplation about what death is like for our dogs and what it might be for us. \n• The Tube: An animated rendition of the London Underground or “tube\,” imagining the passengers as canines. \n \n• Hustle and Run: A documentary about a scrappy band of “everyday” women from a small town in England\, who compete as the underdogs with their canine pack in Flyball (a competition known as “the F1 of dog sports”) and go all the way to Crufts\, the renowned British dog show. \n• Companions for Life: A documentary that is a testimonial about how a trained service dog has opened up his person’s world. \n• The Singular Affair of the Missing Ball: An animated tale of the canine sleuth\, Sherlock Whippet\, who solves a mystery with the help of his intrepid companion\, Dr. Woofson\, a Bulldog. \n• One Mind: A PURINA SERVICE DOG SALUTE WINNER! A glimpse into the life-changing freedom and love provided by Holly\, a specially trained PTSD service dog who became a lifeline and soulmate for her veteran with PTSD\, who had previously been housebound and suicidal. \n• I’m Still Here; a Dog’s Purpose Forever: A poetically artistic rendering of Michon’s spiritual\, uplifting book by the same name\, reminding us that when our dogs die they never leave us. \n“New York Dog Film Festival 2026” is presented in partnership with the Humane Society of Sedona. \n“New York Dog Film Festival 2026” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre March 28-April 2.
