SUMMARY:The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” showing March 27-April 2 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nBased on a remarkable true story\, “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” traces the life of Herbert Heller and the unlikely friendship that transforms both him and a young woman searching for her own sense of direction. \nAs a boy\, Herbert survived the Holocaust and carried the weight of an unspoken secret for six decades\, choosing silence as a way to move through the world. When he meets Abby\, a perceptive and intuitive teenager quietly grappling with her own emotional burdens\, something shifts. Abby’s curiosity\, compassion\, and steady presence begin to open a door Herbert long believed was sealed. \nAs Herbert slowly shares the truth of his past\, an unexpected bond takes root—one that bridges generations and reveals how connection can illuminate even the darkest corners of memory. Through each other\, they discover understanding\, healing\, and the courage to finally voice what has been held inside. \nStarring Stephen Lang (Avatar) as Herbert\, Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade) as Abby\, and Luke David Blumm (Where the Crawdads Sing) as young Herbert\, “The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” is a profoundly moving film about resilience\, remembrance\, and the life-changing impact of being truly heard. It is a testament to the power of storytelling — and to the hope found in human connection. \n“The Optimist: The Bravest Act is Truth” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres March 27-April 2. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday\, March 27 and 28 at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday and Monday\, March 29 and 30 at 7:00 p.m.; and Tuesday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, March 31\, April 1 and 2 at 4:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:A Magnificent Life
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “A Magnificent Life” showing March 27-April 2 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nIn 1955\, 60-year-old Marcel Pagnol is a well-known and acclaimed playwright and filmmaker. When the editor-in-chief of ELLE magazine commissions a weekly column about Pagnol’s childhood\, he sees this as a great opportunity to go back to his artistic roots: writing. \nRealizing his memory is failing him and deeply affected by the disappointing results of his last two plays\, Pagnol starts doubting his ability to pursue his work. That is until Little Marcel — the young boy he used to be — appears to him as if by magic. \nTogether\, they will explore Marcel Pagnol’s incredible life and bring back to life his most cherished encounters and memories. His memories resurface as the words flow: the arrival of talkies\, the first major film studio\, his attachment to actors\, the experience of writing. \nThe greatest storyteller of all time becomes the hero of his own story. \n“A Magnificent Life” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres March 27-April 2. Showtimes will be Friday and Saturday\, March 27 and 28 at 3:30 p.m.; Sunday\, March 29 at 6:30 p.m.; Monday\, March 30 at 4:00 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday\, March 31 and April 2 at 7:00 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W. Hwy. 89A\, in West Sedona.

SUMMARY:André Is an Idiot
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “André Is an Idiot” showing April 3-9 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \n“André Is an Idiot” was one of the top award-winners at the recent Sedona International Film Festival\, garnering the Best of Fest Documentary Award and rave audience reviews. \nUnexpected\, irreverent\, and defiantly heartfelt\, “André Is an Idiot” is a wildly life-affirming film about death and about the strange clarity that arrives when time suddenly becomes finite. \nWhen André Ricciardi\, a self-proclaimed “idiot” for skipping the colonoscopy that could have saved him\, learns he is dying\, he turns his final chapter into an experiment in radical honesty\, humor\, and curiosity. \nA lifelong iconoclast and ad-industry provocateur\, André has never done anything the conventional way\, and confronting mortality proves no different: he picks up a camera\, cracks a joke\, and begins to ask the biggest questions of his life with disarming candor. In a deeply collaborative partnership with director Tony Benna\, André’s inner world — his stories\, fears\, philosophies\, and absurdist imagination — is brought to life through fantastical stop-motion animation woven into vérité footage. \nThese animated interludes illuminate the way André processes both joy and dread\, transforming the film into a playful yet profound portrait of a man determined to face death as openly and ridiculously as he has lived. \n“André Is an Idiot” is ultimately a celebration of resilience\, creative audacity\, and the kind of fearless humor that refuses to let darkness have the last word. It invites audiences to rethink what “normal” looks like in the face of sickness and loss — and to consider that sometimes\, the best way to survive life’s cruelties is simply to laugh at them. \n“André Is an Idiot” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre April 3-9. Showtimes will be Friday\, Sunday\, Monday and Thursday\, April 3\, 5\, 6 and 9 at 3:30 p.m.; and Tuesday and Wednesday\, April 7 and 8 at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:A Night of The Mentalist
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is once again proud to present Red Rocks Magic “A Night of The Mentalist” for an encore performance — an extraordinary audience-driven magical experience — on Friday\, April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. This is Sedona’s #1 magic experience! \nMentalist Brett Barry presents his mind-boggling Sedona-themed magic show\, exploring the incredible power of the mind and the unseen connections we have to one another. Red Rocks Magic is a “sleights of mind” tour-de-force\, with extensive audience interaction and this will not be your typical magic show. \nThe 75-minute journey promises an afternoon of “mind-to-mind” magic and apparent ESP that will leave guests energized\, inspired and amazed. \nSurrounded by the incredible beauty and palette of the rich desert colors of Sedona\, Red Rocks Magic incorporates the magic of this stunning environment. \nThis is NOT hypnosis or a psychic show and Brett is not a medium (and will not speak to your dear departed). Rather\, he is an intuitive entertainer looking to bring the audience together for a fun shared experience. But this won’t be your everyday magic show. As examples\, he will open a fully locked and borrowed iPhone and somehow know the name of an audience member’s childhood pet. \n \nBrett Barry will act as your guide and “chef\,” serving up thoughts and moments of impossibility — destinations unknown. He admits that he often picks up on thoughts by paying attention to little things that most people often never notice. But he does. He doesn’t read minds – he reads people. \nThe audience will make their own choices and the audience will make their own decisions. Yet somehow\, Brett Barry (often) knows. He promises that everything during the show will be UNREAL. So\, fasten your seatbelts for an unexpected ride of exquisite entertainment. \nBrett Barry has performed for hundreds of audiences across the country since 2013\, including numerous Fortune 500 organizations such as Uber\, Goldman Sachs\, and Amex. He is also a creator and innovator in the mystery arts\, and acted as a consultant for many well-known luminaries on TV and stage. \nHe is again thrilled to bring his curated Red Rocks Magic experience to the gorgeous Mary D. Fisher theater in Sedona! \nAll tickets include a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with Mentalist Brett Barry either before or after the show. Performance tickets often vanish quickly after release\, so we suggest buying early. \nLearn more about the Red Rocks Magic show at www.RedRocksMagic.com. \nJoin us for “A Night of The Mentalist” on Friday\, April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Mary D. SUMMARY:Jeanie Carroll in Concert: You Can Go Home Again
DESCRIPTION:After decades of performances that have carried her from Arizona to Europe\, North Africa and beyond\, vocalist Jeanie Carroll is bringing her signature blend of style-hopping songcraft back to a stage many locals know well: the Mary D Fisher Theatre. \nCarroll headlines this musical performance on April 4 at 4 p.m. (Four-four at four: divinely easy to remember)\, with Dave Len Scott on trumpet and piano and special guests\, the Red RockAppella Quartet. \nFor Sedona audiences\, the concert has the feeling of a homecoming. Carroll lived in Sedona for 30 years\, building a reputation as a performer with an unusually wide repertoire and a gift for connecting across generations. Though she now spends most of her time in Las Vegas\, her return date still lands with extra resonance in a town where she’s not just a familiar voice\, but part of the community’s musical memory. \n \nCarroll’s mantra\, “Keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart”\, reads like the kind of line you might find on a dressing-room mirror\, but it also describes the arc of her career. She has gone down many musical paths\, from Motown and rock ’n’ roll to disco\, Broadway and jazz standards\, and blues\, and she’s sung in several languages shaped by years of living and performing abroad. Her background includes performances in Europe\, and stops in places as varied as Marrakesh\, Tunis\, Istanbul\, St. Petersburg\, Stockholm\, Montreal\, Chicago\, New York and Los Angeles. \nThis performance will include hits from Edith Piaf\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Barbra Streisand\, Joni Mitchell\, Linda Ronstadt\, Sinatra\, Garland\, and even Todd Rundgren and Stephen Sondheim. Carroll’s repertoire is as wide-ranging as her passport. She has also played guitar and percussion and her stage résumé includes productions such as Cabaret\, Beauty & the Beast\, Man of La Mancha\, Pirates of Penzance\, The Merry Widow and The Gondoliers. \nWhat distinguishes Carroll\, colleagues say\, is not simply range but the way she navigates it as a performer who can shift tone without losing the thread of a set or the attention of a room. Producer and Red Earth Theatre Producing Artistic Director Kate Hawkes\, who has worked with Carroll\, puts it this way: “Jeanie Carroll brings a palpable joy to anything she performs on stage. From Jazz and folk\, to light opera and musical theatre and anything else\, Jeanie knows what she is doing and takes her audience on a glorious journey. Jeanie’s fluid\, rich voice and crystal clear lyrics ensures each show is a treat at all levels….Don’t miss a Jeanie Carroll performance.” \nThat sense of coming back matters\, because Carroll’s relationship to the community goes beyond the stage. In addition to her work as an entertainer\, vocalist\, emcee\, DJ and musical host\, she spent 20 years as the K–8 music educator for the Sedona-Oak Creek School District\, shaping thousands of students’ first experiences with rhythm\, melody and performance. She created the Annual International Festival of Food & Song\, an event in which her young students sang in foreign languages as “Ambassadors of Peace\,” reflecting her ongoing advocacy for music education and world peace. \n \nFor this Mary D Fisher Theatre concert\, Carroll will be accompanied by Dave Len Scott\, a musician known locally for his work in jazz and classical settings and for an approach that merges instrumental voices in unusual ways. Scott performs both trumpet and piano and has led ensembles including his own Dave Len Scott Jazz Quartet. Formerly based in San Francisco\, he has become a familiar presence around Sedona and Northern Arizona. In 2024\, he performed with pianist Tiantian Liang in a program spanning two centuries of trumpet repertoire\, a reminder of the breadth he brings to his solo bandstand. \n \nThe performance also includes a guest appearance by the Red RockAppella Quartet\, a group Carroll knows from the inside. She sang with Red RockAppella as a Sweet Adeline for 13 years\, and the quartet with Sandy Adams\, Dianne Evans\, Deb Sanders and Carol Welsh grew out of a shared commitment to harmony singing and community service. They will add a delightfully different sonic color to the afternoon. \nJeanie Carroll’s return is more than a date on the calendar. (Four-four at four) It’s a chance to hear an artist whose career has been built on travel\, languages and genres and whose roots remain\, unmistakably\, in the red-rock community where she taught\, performed\, raised her daughters and her musical voice. Welcome home. \nJoin us for Jeanie Carroll in Concert: You Can Go Home Again on Saturday\, April 4 at 4 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Tickets are $25. \nClick on the BUY TICKETS link to the right to order tickets online\, or call 928-282-1177 to order by phone. Both the Sedona International Film Festival Office and the Mary D. SUMMARY:FREE Sedona Poetry Slam
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona Poetry Slam returns to the Mary D. Fisher Theatre in West Sedona for a poetry slam on Saturday\, April 4. Admission is free to all\, thanks to the sponsorship of the Northern Arizona Book Festival\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that holds the annual festival the weekend of April 12\, 13 and 14\, in Flagstaff. \nApril is also National Poetry Month\, so the best way to support poetry is seeing a showcase of the best poets in Northern Arizona. Many of the competing poets from the Sedona Poetry Slam will be showcasing their work\, along with Flagstaff Poetry Slam\, which are both festival partners. \nOpen Slam\nA poetry slam is like a series of high-energy\, three-minute one-person plays\, judged by the audience. Slam poetry is an art form that allows written page poets to share their work alongside theatrical performers\, hip-hop artists and lyricists. \nPoets come from as far away as Phoenix\, Tucson\, Prescott and Flagstaff\, competing against local poets from Sedona and Cottonwood\, college poets from Northern Arizona University and youth poets from Verde Valley high schools. All types of poetry are welcome on the stage\, from street-wise hip-hop and narrative performance poems\, to political rants and introspective confessionals. Any poem is a “slam” poem if performed in a competition. All poets get three minutes per round to entertain and inspire the audience with their creativity. \nAnyone can sign up to compete in the slam for the $75 grand prize and $25 second-place prize\, paid. To compete in the slam\, poets will need three original poems\, each lasting no longer than three minutes. No props\, costumes nor musical accompaniment are permitted. The poets are judged Olympics-style by five members of the audience selected at random at the beginning of the slam. \nEmail foxthepoet@yahoo.com to sign up early to compete or by the Friday before the slam\, or sign up at the door the day of the slam. \nThe Mary D. Fisher Theatre is located at 2030 W. SR 89A\, Suite A-3\, in West Sedona. Tickets are free. Call 928-282-1177 or visit SedonaFilmFestival.org for more information. \nUpcoming Slams\nThe final two poetry slams of the season will be held on May 9 and June 6. The prize money is funded in part by a donation from Verde Valley poetry supporters Jeanne and Jim Freeland. For more information\, visit sedonafilmfestival.com or foxthepoet.blogspot.com. For a full list of slam poetry events in Arizona\, visit azpoet.com. \nWhat is Poetry Slam?\nFounded at the Green Mill Tavern in Chicago in 1984 by Marc Smith\, poetry slam is a competitive artistic sport designed to get people who would otherwise never go to a poetry reading excited about the art form when it becomes a high-energy competition. Poetry slams are judged by five randomly chosen members of the audience who assign numerical value to individual poets’ contents and performances. \nPoetry slam has become an international artistic sport\, with more than 100 major poetry slams in the United States\, Canada\, Australia and Western Europe. Slam poets have opened at the Winter Olympics\, performed at the White House and at the United Nations General Assembly and were featured on “Russell Simmons’ Def Poets” on HBO.

With an unending supply of enthusiasm\, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic\, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them that elusive Broadway contract. \n \nMICHAEL DOHERTY\nMichael Doherty — an east coast-based actor\, writer\, and comedian — has spent five seasons at the Utah Shakespeare Festival\, playing roles including Fanny Babbs in Charley’s Aunt\, Charlie in The Foreigner\, the Narrator in Every Brilliant Thing\, and Mr. Green in Clue. He is a graduate of the inaugural class of The Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training. Acting credits include work with The Walnut Street Theatre\, Arden Theatre Company\, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival\, People’s Light & Theatre Company\, 1812 Productions\, Theatre Horizon\, New Paradise Laboratories\, and narration work with The Philadelphia Orchestra. SUMMARY:Colors of Time
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Colors of Time” showing April 11-16 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres. \nA group of strangers\, all descendants of a woman named Adèle Meunier\, are gathered in Normandy. The town would like to purchase her long-abandoned property\, and four “cousins” are tasked with overseeing the transaction. Thus begins a genealogical journey into the past\, taking us to 1895 Paris\, with the City of Light on the brink of an industrial and cultural revolution. \nAptly entitled “The Coming of the Future” in French\, “Colors of Time” literally plunges us into a moment in time when Parisian creativity is at its apex — when not only electricity and technology\, but photography and Impressionism in painting and music are creating a spark that’s about to erupt into a movement far beyond anyone’s expectations. \nCédric Klapisch‘s endearing new comedy is a soul-stirring\, time-traveling trip for lovers of the arts everywhere. \n“Inventive\, cleverly structured\, and beautifully written\, it’s a thoroughly engaging story\, enlivened by a terrific ensemble cast.” — Next Best Picture \n“Genially inventive in messing with the codes of period cinema.” — Screen International \n“Colors of Time” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon and Mary D. Fisher Theatres April 11-16. SUMMARY:Heads or Tails?
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Heads or Tails?” showing April 17-23 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nJohn C. Reilly stars as Buffalo Bill in “Heads or Tails?” — a surreal Italian Western film that blends frontier drama with Italian folklore. \nAt the dawn of the 20th century\, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show rolls into Italy\, peddling the myth of the American frontier and sparking the imagination of Rosa\, a young woman trapped in a stifling marriage to a powerful and violent landowner. \nWhen a rodeo between American cowboys and Italian butteri ends in tragedy\, Rosa flees with Santino\, the daring local rider who bested the Americans. But in a world where justice is sold to the highest bidder\, Buffalo Bill and others join the hunt for the bounty on Santino’s head. Rosa’s dream of freedom quickly collides with the weight of reality — and like in every good Western ballad\, fate flips a coin. \n“Heads or Tails?” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre April 17-23. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Tuesday and Wednesday\, April 17\, 18\, 21 and 22 at 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday\, Monday and Thursday\, April 19\, 20 and 23 at 3:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members. SUMMARY:Zenprov Comedy: Happy Ending
DESCRIPTION:After 15 years and more than 130 live performances\, Zenprov Comedy is calling it quits. Don’t miss their finale aptly titled “Happy Ending” on Saturday\, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mary Fisher Theatre in Sedona. \nThe show brings together original founding members Derek Dujardin\, Shaeri Richards\, Shaunn Cochran\, Chris Redish\, Mary Carder\, Betty Testa and Dr. Linda Roemer with fresh talent Nathaniel Montgomery\, Nick Shank\, and Ryan Rice. It is an eclectic\, multi-generational ensemble\, with performers ranging from their thirties to their seventies. \n“I originally chose the name Zenprov to capture improv at its highest form\,” said Derek Dujardin\, founder and director of Zenprov Comedy. “It’s those rare\, transcendent moments when the art of improvisation takes over. It can feel like an out-of-body experience—watching a scene unfold effortlessly. The mind is blank\, yet fully present\, and something surprising\, funny\, and profound arises on its own.” \nBesides the Zen-meets-improv philosophy of play\, the thing that sets Zenprov apart is that the troupe isn’t just a group; they are a group of true friends. They celebrate birthdays together\, take trips\, and host dinners and backyard jams with musicians and fellow improvisers. That genuine heart connection shows up on stage. \n“We don’t exactly operate with healthy physical or emotional boundaries when we perform\,” Dujardin admits. “We’ve shocked more than a few guest improv instructors with scenes that might get other players kicked out of class—or sent straight to HR. But that level of trust creates a sense of deep safety and palpable warmth you can feel in every performance. So\, we get away with a lot that other groups couldn’t.” \nThe troupe wants to honor former members Mike Burdick and Tony Carito\, who have since passed on. They also thank Patrick Schweiss for giving them a platform to perform in Sedona over the years. “The Mary D. Fisher feels like home\, and we will miss performing there. Patrick has always had our back\,” said Dujardin. \nWith that\, the troupe will let Patrick Schweiss\, Executive Director of the Sedona International Film Festival\, have the last word on the group: “Zenprov is the funniest improv troupe in Northern Arizona. People were laughing so hard their cheeks were hurting.” \nThe Mary D. Fisher Theater is located across the street from the Harkins Movie Theater at 2030 St. Rt. 89A\, next door to BMO Harris. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The show starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. and concludes around 9:15 p.m. Beer\, wine\, and snacks are available in the lobby. Tickets are $16 pre-sale or $18 the day of the show.

SUMMARY:Explorers Club Live: Worlds Rarely Seen – Light in the Darkness
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to bring you an exciting event on Sunday\, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre: Explorers Club Live: Worlds Rarely Seen – Light in the Darkness. \nExplorers Club members Dr. Jut Wynne and Paul D. Maley will give a joint lecture. They’ll share images and stories from the far edges of our planet: Wynne will present photographs and tales from his recent cave research in Bhutan\, while Maley will showcase astonishing images from his latest eclipse and aurora expeditions — spectacles far beyond the northern lights recently visible across the lower 48. \n \nDr. Jut Wynne\nDr. Jut Wynne is a cave ecologist\, conservation ecologist\, and explorer based in Flagstaff\, Arizona. At Northern Arizona University’s Department of Biological Sciences\, he leads the Cave Ecology and Exploration Lab\, where he studies how cave-dwelling animals live\, what they need to survive\, and how human activity affects these fragile systems. His fieldwork has taken him across the American Southwest and around the world\, including Rapa Nui\, Belize\, Spain\, Chile\, China\, and Bhutan\, where he is helping to understand life in largely unexplored cave systems. \nWynne and his collaborators have discovered multiple new arthropod genera and dozens of new species\, and he advocates including subterranean ecosystems in global climate and biodiversity efforts. Working at the intersection of cave science and planetary exploration\, he has also advanced our understanding of caves across the solar system. A Fulbright Scholar and Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer\, he is also an engaging public speaker. \n \nPaul D. Maley\nPaul D. Maley has been a leading figure in astronomical observation for more than five decades. A former NASA contractor for 41 years supporting Mission Operations and the Flight Director’s Office\, he has been a member of the Johnson Space Center Astronomical Society since 1969. Since organizing his first solar eclipse expedition in 1970\, Maley has observed 88 eclipses of the Sun—more than anyone living or dead—and has led over 54 eclipse expedition trips across six continents. An avid traveler and satellite tracker\, he has visited more than 300 international destinations (countries and islands) and logged more than 1\,000 eclipses of stars by asteroids. \nA Fellow of The Explorers Club and Royal Astronomical Society\, Maley has received numerous awards for his contributions to amateur astronomy\, including the Bruce Blair Medal and the Gordon Meyers Amateur Achievement Award. He will next lead aurora viewing expeditions to Alaska and Iceland through 2027. \n \nAbout The Explorers Club\nThe Explorers Club is a multidisciplinary international society advancing scientific exploration and field research across land\, sea\, air\, and space\, supporting discovery\, education\, and conservation since 1904. Its members have achieved historic firsts\, fostered environmental preservation\, and inspired curiosity through lectures\, grants\, outreach\, and global chapters. This lecture series is ongoing. \nExplorers Club Live: Worlds Rarely Seen – Light in the Darkness takes place Sunday\, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For tickets and more information\, please call 928-282-1177. Both the theatre and film festival office are located at 2030 W.
