SUMMARY:The Merry Widow: Met Opera Encore
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the summer encore of the Met Opera’s “The Merry Widow” (from the 2014-15 season) on Saturday\, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \nSoprano Renée Fleming stars as the heiress who captivates all of Paris in Lehár’s enchanting operetta. Baritone Nathan Gunn co-stars as Danilo\, alongside Broadway legend Kelli O’Hara as Valencienne in the dazzling 2015 production directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award–winner Susan Stroman. Andrew Davis conducts. \nAct I\nThe Pontevedrian ambassador\, Baron Zeta\, is giving a ball. His wife\, Valencienne\, flirts with the young Frenchman Camille de Rosillon\, who writes “I love you” on her fan. Zeta plans to get Danilo to marry the rich widow Hanna Glawari so that her millions will stay in Pontevedro. Valencienne realizes that she has lost her fan. Danilo tells Hanna that he’s not interested in marriage. \nAct II\nAt a party\, Njegus reveals that Camille is in love with a mystery woman. He believes the mysterious fan to be the key to her identity. When Hanna finds the fan\, she assumes it is a gift from Danilo\, who still won’t say “I love you.” Camille and Valencienne finally find the missing fan\, and this time Valencienne writes “I am a respectable wife” on it. They disappear into a pavilion. When Zeta arrives\, Njegus instead sneaks Hanna in to take Valencienne’s place. Hanna emerges with Camille\, enraging Danilo. \nAct III\nAt Maxim’s\, Danilo forbids Hanna to marry Camille. Zeta recognizes the fan as his wife’s. He proposes to Hanna — who informs him that she will lose her fortune if she remarries. Only now does Danilo declare his love. She then explains that upon remarrying\, her fortune will pass to her new husband. Valencienne asks Zeta to read the other side of her fan — she is a respectable wife. Jake’s first task is to save the orphanage the brothers grew up in from closing\, by raising $5\,000 to pay back taxes. The two are convinced they can earn the money by getting their old band back together. However\, after playing several gigs and making a few enemies\, including the police\, the brothers face daunting odds to deliver the money on time. \nBring your lawn chair or blanket and relax in front of a massive outdoor movie screen. Fisher Theatre. \n“Wild Inside” premieres nationally (and in Sedona!) on International Owl Awareness Day\, August 4. \nWhat would happen if a captive-born owl with no survival skills tried to make it on his own in New York City? In “Wild Inside”\, we discover the answer is more incredible\, and more consequential\, than we could have ever imagined.  \nIn February 2023\, a Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco escapes from the Central Park Zoo and sets off on a magical odyssey through the island of Manhattan. Flaco answers the call of the wild – and discovers he was wild inside all along.  \n“Wild Inside” is an underdog story of resilience and self-determination as Flaco the Owl beats the odds and accomplishes the impossible. Flaco busts out of his cage barely able to fly\, but he adapts\, he explores and eventually — it seems — he goes far beyond mere survival\, becoming an internationally known icon of freedom\, hooting from the highest water towers. He claims all of New York City as his wild kingdom.  \nThe remarkable story of Flaco raises some questions: is it right to keep a bird in a cage? Is there any real distinction between “zoo animals” and “wild animals”? How can we be better to our nonhuman neighbors?  \nThis one-of-a-kind owl’s epic song is sung in “Wild Inside” by a chorus of besotted New Yorkers – young and old\, bird-nerds and civilians\, many of them immigrants themselves – all of them reaching for a glimpse of the wild\, a glimmer of magic\, or even just someone to believe in. DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to partner with award-winning surround sound composer and producer Koz Mraz for “Jazz/Rock Fusion in Surround Sound” on Thursday\, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \nYou will be blown away by this audio/visual 5.1 Surround Sound Music Experience in Sedona’s best sound system\, the Mary D. Fisher Theater. \nThis surround sound experience will feature the music of the most groundbreaking\, landmark artists credited with founding Jazz Rock Fusion\, including Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock and Billy Cobham. \nIn 1970\, Miles Davis released “Bitches Brew” which marked the beginning of fusion. It was a rhythmic explosion of 13 musicians. They became the who’s who of fusion Jazz. All drew on soul\, rock and the electric guitar influence of Jimmy Hendrix. \nHerbie Hancock’s 1973 album Head Hunters — also a landmark jazz-funk fusion record — was the first platinum-selling record in jazz history. \nBilly Cobham’s Spectrum (1973) is widely considered one of the most groundbreaking jazz-fusion albums in music history. The album revolutionized drumming and the genre by bridging complex jazz improvisation with the high-octane power and aggressive amplification of rock. \nPresented by Award-Winning Surround Sound composer/producer Koz Mraz (Discus Award\, 5.1 Category 2001\, Communicator Surround Award 2002\, Aurora Surround Award & Surround Grammy nominee 2005). A College Professor at Citrus College\, Glendale\, and Pasadena College\, Mraz taught classes in music production\, audio engineering\, and broadcast technology for over 15 years. The writer/director of “Of Color and Ink” — Weimin Zhang — will be in Sedona to present the film and host a Q&A discussion following both screenings. \n“Of Color and Ink” is an extraordinary documentary film that uncovers the little-known exile journey of global artist Chang Dai-chien (1899-1983)\, China’s foremost 20th-century painter. He has often been compared with Picasso\, and his paintings outsell Van Gogh and have broken records at auction. \nThis is the first film to document Chang Dai-chien’s 30-year exile in South America\, Europe and the United States. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Weimin Zhang\, Of Color and Ink is the culmination of Zhang’s 12-year journey to unravel the mysteries and controversies surrounding his political\, artistic and spiritual quests. The film delves into Chang’s extraordinary life in exile\, highlighting the global context of his art and its broad impact as it crossed cultural boundaries and political borders — even more relevant in today’s world. \n“Of Color and Ink” argues for his significant influence on Western art and illustrates how his work formed a bridge between East and West. Last February\, The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco premiered Of Color and Ink\, and called it a significant revelation: “Despite being the world’s top-selling artist\, Chang Dai-chien’s life remained a mystery — until now.” \n“Of Color and Ink” has been acclaimed by critics as both a remarkable cinematic achievement and a significant scholarly contribution. \n \nWRITER/DIRECTOR WEIMIN ZHANG\nWeimin Zhang is an award-winning filmmaker and a prominent member of China’s Sixth Generation of filmmakers. She is a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy and Ohio University’s film school. Over the course of her career\, she has worked on numerous acclaimed films in both China and the United States as a director and cinematographer. Among her many achievements is The House of Spirit\, which received the Women in Film Award and was screened at more than a dozen film festivals. In 2007\, the Library of Congress acquired her interactive multimedia project\, Nüshu: The Women’s Secret Writing\, for its permanent collection. He works with land managers to improve rangeland stewardship and has worked with ranchers to prevent conflicts with large carnivores such as grizzly bears and wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains of Montana and Wyoming. He is a board member of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project. \n \nCourtney Vail is a wildlife biologist and social scientist who has worked within the conservation and animal welfare field for over 30 years. With a deep background in environmental policy and psychology\, she has provided leadership for the design and implementation of diverse domestic and international programs\, campaigns\, and initiatives for marine and terrestrial wildlife across the private\, non-profit\, and government sectors\, seeking to align science and ethics. She is board chair of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project. \n \nEmily Renn is a Ph.D. student in the School of Earth and Sustainability at Northern Arizona University\, seeking innovative\, inclusive\, and interdisciplinary approaches to human-Mexican gray wolf coexistence to ensure that wolves can thrive in self-sustaining and ecologically effective populations across the U.S. Southwest. She previously served as executive director of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project.

Amneris\, realizing that Aida is her rival\, is determined to win Radamès. At the victory celebration\, Radamès asks the King for mercy for the Ethiopian prisoners\, among whom is Amonasro\, Aida’s father. The King grants the request and promises Radamès his daughter’s hand in marriage. \nACT III\nAida and Radamès meet secretly. Urged by her father\, Aida makes Radamès tell her the secret battle plan of his army. Amonasro\, hiding nearby\, overhears their conversation. When Radamès realizes who Aida’s father is\, he is desperate about what he has done. The high priest Ramfis has him arrested as a traitor. Aida and Amonasro escape. \nACT IV\nRadamès\, believing Aida dead\, has been sentenced to be buried alive\, but Aida has hidden in the vault to share his fate. They express their love for the last time.
