SUMMARY:Winter of the Crow
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Winter of the Crow” showing Oct. 30-Nov. 4 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. \nInspired by the short story by Booker Prize and Nobel Prize winning author Olga Tokarczuk\, the latest film from director Kasia Adamik — “Winter of the Crow” — is a thrilling cat-and-mouse game set at the onset of Poland’s Martial Law era in 1981\, starring Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville who plays an ordinary woman caught in an extraordinary situation. \nWarsaw\, Poland – December 13\, 1981 – Martial law is imposed and overnight shuts down the country just as British psychiatry professor Dr Joan Andrews (Manville) arrives as a guest lecturer at the University. Taxis have been replaced by tanks; citizens are treated like criminals. But as chaos engulfs the city\, armed with her polaroid camera\, she witnesses a brutal murder by the secret police. In mortal danger and trapped as Poland is closed down\, Joan becomes a hunted fugitive running for her life. \nUsing her instincts and newly-formed connection with a young student\, Joan navigates the labyrinthine streets of Warsaw desperately battling against the clock to make the last plane out. The British Ambassador could be her ally\, but can he even trust those who are working with him? Compelled by a strength and conscience she did not know she had\, Joan finds the courage and determination to try and outsmart a totalitarian regime and pursue a path to justice for her new Polish friends. But in the face of such oppression\, will she make the last flight home and manage to release her incriminating photos out into the world? \n“Lesley Manville delivers a commanding performance.” — Next Best Picture \n“The British star quietly captivates.” — Screen Daily \n“Lesley Manville\, driven and determined as ever\, never lets us go.” — The Guardian \n“Winter of the Crow” will be shown at the Mary D. SUMMARY:The Scout
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “The Scout” showing Oct. 30-Nov. 5 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nSofia works as a location scout for a TV pilot filming in New York City. Driving around the city’s different neighborhoods\, she enters the private spaces of strangers to photograph their cozy apartments and eclectic shops\, stepping into the fabric of their lives while trying to satisfy the demands of her erratic employers. \nOver a day filled with these encounters\, Sofia witnesses moments of curiosity\, vulnerability\, and quiet tension until her work takes a sudden\, personal turn. \nDrawing from her own experience as a location scout\, writer-director Paula González-Nasser captures the poetry and costs of being a young creative. SUMMARY:Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie
DESCRIPTION:The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie” showing Oct. 30-Nov. 5 at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre. \nMore than 30 years after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa\, a religious decree calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie over the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses\, Rushdie traveled to Chautauqua to speak about the United States as a sanctuary for exiled writers and artists. The event marked the 20th anniversary of a writer-refuge program — a setting meant to celebrate safety and creative freedom. It was there that a young man rushed the stage\, intent on killing him with a knife. Using excerpts from Rushdie’s works\, including his powerful memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder\, Alex Gibney’s documentary is both a striking testament to freedom of expression and a defiant response to the attempt on Rushdie’s life. \nThe film incorporates never-before-seen footage shot by Rushdie’s wife\, Rachel Eliza Griffiths\, in the days and weeks following the attack. This material offers a graphic\, unflinching\, and deeply intimate account of what happened\, including archival footage of Rushdie’s early career and rise to literary fame\, the controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses\, and events leading up to the attempted murder. It also traces Rushdie’s physical and spiritual recovery\, including the challenges he continues to face\, from losing an eye to the reduced use of one hand. \n“Knife” blends reportage with fictionalized dialogues to explore the mindset of the attacker\, probing the “why” behind the violence. At its core\, the film is a portrait of resilience — of Rushdie’s own extraordinary strength and the love that carried him through this ordeal — and a call to action against censorship and hatred. It argues that art itself can be a form of resistance. \nIn “Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie”\, Gibney — working with longtime collaborators Andy Grieve (editor) and Will Bates (composer) — crafts a poetic dreamscape that reflects how Rushdie views his writing as his own “knife\,” a tool to fight back\, reclaim his story\, and respond to violence with imagination and art. \n“Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie” will be shown at the Alice Gill-Sheldon Theatre Oct. 30-Nov. 5. Showtimes will be Friday\, Saturday\, Wednesday and Thursday\, Oct. 30\, 31 and Nov. 4 and 5 at 3:30 p.m.; and Sunday\, Monday and Tuesday\, Nov. 1\, 2 and 3 at 6:30 p.m. \nTickets are $12\, or $9 for Film Festival members.
